The Science Behind The Path Between Minds — and the Hope That Inspired It
Blending real neuroscience with a story of unseen guidance, second chances, and a future worth reaching for.
In the story Signs, from Chronicles of the Grim Reaper, Volume I, the Grim Reaper gives a man a second chance—not to save himself, but to guide a boy destined for greatness. That boy was William. In The Path Between Minds, we follow William’s journey from an isolated, bullied child to the inventor of a technology that changes the way humanity communicates forever.
When I began writing William’s story, I wanted his invention to be more than a plot device. It had to be believable—grounded in real neuroscience, biology, and engineering—so that even the most tech-minded reader could say, “Yes, this could happen someday.” I also wanted it to be meaningful, something that would help humanity in a powerful way.
That’s how Signium was born: a fictional but scientifically plausible telepathic communication technology.
Why Telepathic Communication?
I wanted William’s work to break barriers—both literal and figurative. Telepathic communication in fiction often leans into the mystical, but I wanted to anchor it in science that already exists today. We know that:
EEG can detect patterns in the brain’s electrical activity.
MEG can sense the magnetic fields produced by that activity.
fNIRS can measure changes in blood oxygenation linked to brain activity.
tFUS and tACS can non-invasively influence targeted brain regions.
These are real tools in neuroscience labs right now. By combining them, William could design a system capable of reading intentional thought patterns—turning them into meaning that could be sent securely to another mind.
The Core of Signium
Signium works in four key stages:
Interface – A flexible MEG cap with dense room-temperature magnetometers, paired with high-density fNIRS sensors and two small EEG bands. This multi-modal capture allows for both timing precision and spatial accuracy.
Decoder – Instead of guessing words, it maps patterns into a semantic space, a landscape of meaning. By training the system with imagined speech and concept association tasks, it can predict what a person means to say—only when they trigger a specific “push-to-talk” brain signal.
Encoder – Using tFUS and tACS, the system can deliver meaning back into the brain without sound or text. The recipient experiences a clear, voluntary understanding—like knowing the shape of a thought before putting it into words.
Safety – Every transmission is encrypted with neural “handshakes,” requires mutual consent, and has strict safeguards against passive thought monitoring.
Why It Matters
I wanted the invention to do more than wow the reader—it needed to matter. Signium:
Gives a voice to those who can’t speak due to injury or illness.
Removes language barriers without translation.
Allows people to share meaning directly, deepening understanding.
This wasn’t just about science fiction. It was about creating a symbol for connection—showing what might be possible when science serves empathy.
The Heart of the Story
At its core, The Path Between Minds is a story of hope. William almost gave up on life as a child. The constant bullying, the sense of isolation, and the feeling that no one understood him could have ended his story before it began. But unseen guidance—and his own persistence—pushed him forward.
We never truly know what life has carved out for us. The very thing that feels like a burden today may become the foundation for something extraordinary tomorrow. William’s journey is a reminder to keep going, to keep looking for your signs, because your future may hold more than you can imagine.
Closing Thought
For the tech-minded reader, Signium might feel like a glimpse into the possible future of neuroscience. For those struggling right now, I hope William’s story feels like a promise: that no matter how hard the road is today, it can still lead somewhere beautiful.
